On Elephant Footprints

Here in Sri Lanka there are two touristic seasons: the one of the South Coast from November to the middle of April (the end of the season coincide with the Sinhalese new year that is celebrated the 14th of April – same day of Thomas’ birthday) and the one of the East Coast between April and October.

Considering that we like to do everything the other way around, we are at the end of October in Arugam Bay.

A paradise! Few tourists, empty beaches, small waves and sun (soon the monsoons will come, but up to now beside some thunderstorms during the night, the sky is clear!).

We drove all the way to the border of the Kumana National Park (the former Yala East) hoping to see some rare animal. We saw herons, king fishers and a big number of tiny bright green birds that were playing with us flying on the side of the motorbike.

Actually we were hoping to see some elephants going to drink in one of the water tanks, but of them we saw only footprints…
